A new 10-ruble coin of the bimetallic type belonging to the series called "Ancient Cities of Russia" was put into circulation by the Bank of Russia on May 28. The million pieces of the issue are dedicated to the city and capital of the oblast of the same name "Nizhny Novgorod".
Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Yury Vsevolodovich, the Grand Prince of Vladimir, who was the grandson of Prince Yury Dolgoruky, founder of Moscow. The fortress was built in a strategic and extremely advantageous military place, that is, on the mountain overlooking the confluence of two rivers - Oka and Volga.
At the end of the 15th century, a stone kremlin (walled enclosure, typical of ancient Russian cities) was erected to become an example of the art of Russian fortification construction. In the winter of 1612, the Kremlin walls became the starting point for the militia troops led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky to fight against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders.
After the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan by Ivan the Terrible, Nizhny Novgorod became the center of all trade routes between the Russian state and the East.
Today, Nizhny Novgorod is the center of the Volga Federal District, a city of more than a million inhabitants and the fifth Russian city by number of inhabitants. During its long history, Nizhny Novgorod has become an important commercial and industrial center, without losing its former beauty and magnificent views.
The reverse of the coin features a relief image of the Nizhny Novgorod trade fair building; the coat of arms of Nizhny Novgorod in the upper left; and the inscriptions on the outer ring along the edge: «ДРЕВНИЕ ГОРОДА РОСИИ» (ANCIENT CITIES OF RUSSIA) at the top and «НИЖНИЙ НОВГОРОД» (NIZHNY NÓVGOROD) at the bottom.
The obverse of the coin, at the top of the ring shows the inscription "Bank of Russia", at the bottom "2021". To the left and right of the ring a branch of laurel and oak, respectively, elements that invade the central disk. In the center are the number "10" and the inscription "ruble" indicating the value of the coin. Inside the figure "0" in a latent image is the figure "10" and the inscription "rub." The mint mark is shown at the bottom.
