La Monnaie de Paris has started the issuance of a new series of coins on the literary styles and authors that have marked the history of literature in France and abroad.
On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his birth, the French Mint pays tribute to Jean de La Fontaine, the greatest French fabulist, member of the Académie Française. Through his texts, Jean de la Fontaine still fascinates us today by using animals to represent the broad features of the human character. Thanks to works such as Selected and Versed Fables , Jean de la Fontaine left us a literary legacy of more than 240 fables, as well as numerous collections of short stories and poems.
On the obverse of this coin, the portrait of Jean de La Fontaine, the most famous French fabulist, is shown in profile. He is accompanied by some of the animals from his famous fables that mix with his hair: the frog and the ox, the stork, the wolf, the raven and the fox, the cicada and the ant and, finally, the turtle.
We can also see the castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte, a reference to his friendship with Nicolas Fouquet, the owner of the castle at the time. To the right of the drawing are engraved the years in which he lived and the name of Jean de La Fontaine, as well as the coat of arms of Château-Thierry, his birthplace and where he spent part of his life and which inspired the animals of his fables.
The reverse is common to the entire «L'Art de la Plume» series. In it are inscribed several emblematic quotes, such as "Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" by Voltaire, "Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate" by Dane Alighieri, "To be or not to be: that is the question" by William Shakespeare or "Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker" by Nietzsche.
A pen is engraved in the center of the coin, below the series title and face value, the inscriptions "RF", for the issuing country and on the left and right respectively the mint mark and that of the engraver and designer Joaquin Jimenez.

As the Monnaie de Paris often does lately, it issues several different currencies for the same theme, also in design. Now I show you the other design shared by two other coins, with 10 and 100 euro facials.
On this coin, the Monnaie de Paris has represented the portrait of Jean de la Fontaine, together with the most famous animals in his fables: the crow and the fox, the ant, the wolf and the lamb and, finally, the hare and the tortoise. , surrounding these his face.
His name and the dates of the commemoration are engraved on the right side of the coin. The legend "400 ANS" refers to the commemoration in 2021 of the 400th anniversary of his birth.
The reverse is the one commonly used on most French gold or silver commemorative coins.
