The first, of the two commemorative 2-euro coins that Malta will issue this year, is issued under the name of "Heroes of the Pandemic" and with it we want to pay tribute to all the health personnel who have given everything, and a little more, during the hardest of the health crisis caused by Covid-19.
The image that the coin will present is that of a photo of two Maltese nurses, Doreen Zammit and Charmaine Cauchi, dressed in their corresponding protective equipment, at the moment they give each other a supportive hug, with their eyes closed, before treating coronavirus patients at the Mater Dei Hospital in Malta. The photograph, taken by nurse Diane Faenza, captured the climate of stress, fear and anger among healthcare workers at the time.
In the image you can see the photo on which the design of the coin is based, published by the Times of Malta newspaper, and the image that will present the coin, published exclusively by the Facebook page Show M € Euro Coins.
The coin was originally supposed to be issued during this month, but the delays accumulated by the Monnaie de Paris, in charge of its minting, due to the pandemic, have postponed its issue to a date yet to be determined.
The 60,000 coins that make up the issue will be presented inside a coincard, this being the only option to get it. All will have the Monnaie de Paris mint mark and the starting price will be € 15, although I think it will be very difficult to get it at this price due to the high demand that is expected.
