The first coin in a series dedicated to “Great Music Composers” will be issued in San Marino on 25 July. This inaugural piece is entitled “Centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini”. The coin is inspired by Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly.
Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca in 1858 into an ancient family of musicians and became famous throughout the world for his operatic talent, his compositional personality and his melody. Thanks to his innate communicative originality, theatrical sense and sensitivity with which he was endowed, he created a musical opera that conquered the theatres of the world.
The Philatelic and Numismatic Division of San Marino commemorates Puccini on the centenary of the artist's death on 29 November 1924 in Belgium, with a coin depicting the protagonist of one of his most famous operas: Madama Butterfly.
The obverse shows the coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino (A. Napolione).
The reverse features a portrait of Madama Butterfly, the protagonist of the opera of the same name, three butterflies in flight, a boat on the left and a musical score at the bottom. The composition of the coin is completed by the dates “1924-2024” and the legend “PUCCINI”, in the centre the letter R, which identifies the Mint of Rome, on the right the value 5 EURO, at the bottom centre the name of the author “D. LONGO” and the initials of Annalisa Masini, who was in charge of the engraving, AMINC.
