On July 24, 2024, the Czech National Bank (Česká národní banka) issued a new commemorative silver coin of 200 Czech crowns on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the death of Karel Škréta, a Czech portrait painter who worked in the Baroque style.

Karel Škréta

Karel Škréta Šotnovský from Závořice (1610–1674) was a Czech portrait painter who worked in the Baroque style. He was born into a Protestant noble family who originally operated mills in South Bohemia, but moved to Kutná Hora and then to Prague, where they held various official positions. During the Thirty Years' War he faced difficulties as a Protestant, which led him to leave Prague and live in Saxony and Italy. His work includes portraits as well as religious paintings and church decorations.

The obverse of the coin features images of St. Barbara, St. Catherine and St. Dorothy from the painting The Holy Family by Karel Škréta. The words “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” and the denomination and the abbreviated monetary unit “200 Kč” are written on the upper edge of the coin, separated by a symbol in the form of a “○”. Near the lower left edge of the coin is the mark of the Czech Mint, in the form of the letters “Č” and “M”.

The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Karel Škréta. The lower edge of the coin bears the words “○ KAREL ŠKRÉTA”, “1674 ○ 2024” and the initials of the coin’s designer, Zbyněk Fojtů, formed from the letters “F” and “Z”.
