The UN General Assembly elected Malta, along with Ecuador, Japan, Mozambique and Switzerland, to serve on the Security Council for a two-year term beginning on 1 January 2023.
For the second time, and after 40 years, Malta has been elected to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Malta's continuing strategic foreign policy objective, as a member of the European Union, remains anchored in ensuring international peace and prosperity through multilateral initiatives.
Malta's mandate on the United Nations Security Council revolves around three pillars: security, sustainability and solidarity.
For this reason, two coins have been issued in Malta, one in silver and one in gold with the same design. In this post we will focus on the silver one.
The reverse of the coin features a contemporary allegorical female representation of Malta in profile with a collection of flags hoisted to her right along her head. At the bottom left is the official logo of Malta’s bid, consisting of the lines of a luzzu , a traditional Maltese fishing boat, a symbol of local culture, and of Malta as a small island state surrounded by the sea. The logo also takes the form of the seats in the General Assembly Hall. To the left of the main design along the edge is the inscription UN SECURITY COUNCIL and below it MALTA TERM 2023 – 2024. The denomination 10 EURO appears on the right alongside the name of the coin’s author A. NAPOLIONE.
On the other hand, the obverse of the piece, made by Noel Galea Bason, contains the twelve stars of the European Union surrounding the edge, and in the center is the coat of arms of the Republic of Malta, along with the inscriptions of the name of the issuing country and the date of issue "2024".
