February 29, Rare Disease Day is celebrated around the world. This day, established in 2008, aims to raise awareness about rare diseases and improve access to treatment and medical representation for those affected and their families.

The world of numismatics also joins this day with the issuance of a new coin, a coin that has just been issued in Italy and that also celebrates the 25th anniversary of UNIAMO (Italian Federation of Rare Diseases), an entity that has been working for 25 years. years to improve the quality of life and protect the rights of people who suffer from the disease.

The coin, with a face value of 5 euros, has a circulation of 7,000 pieces and is presented in the BU (uncirculated brilliant) version. Created by the engraver Claudia Momoni and minted by the Rome Mint of the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato.


The obverse of the coin shows the official logo of Uniamo, Federazione Italiana Malattie Rare (Italian Federation of Rare Diseases), surrounded by a series of small, hollow balls, which indicate the rarity compared to normality represented by a circle of smaller balls. large, in relief. Around it, the inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” closed by a star in the exergue. The coin features colored elements.


On the back is the Rare Disease Day logo, which represents hands in which a human silhouette is embedded in the center, to represent solidarity towards people with rare diseases. The inscriptions “FEBRUARY 29, 2024” and “RARE DISEASE DAY” appear at the top and bottom of the coin, respectively; the value "5 EURO" and the author's signature "MOMONI" appear in the center, at the bottom; The "R", the identifying mark of the Rome Mint, appears in the upper right.
