Since 2021, the National Mint and Stamp Factory – Real Casa de la Moneda has joined the celebrations for International Women's Day with the issuance of a coin. Margarita Salas Falgueras (1938-2019) was a Spanish scientist, medical researcher and author in the fields of biochemistry and molecular genetics. She was a pioneer of molecular biology
in Spain, a great defender of women's rights and an inspiration for
generations of female scientists.
She has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize in 1991 and the Santiago Ramón y Cajal National Research Prize in 1999. She is an Honorary Doctor from 10 universities. She was elected member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the European Organization for Molecular Biology. She directed the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center. Salas published more than three hundred and fifty articles in international magazines or books and has 8 patents.
One of his greatest scientific achievements was the discovery of a technique that allows the smallest DNA samples to be amplified in sufficient quantities to perform a complete genomic analysis.
