Yekaterinburg is the fourth most populous city in Russia, the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk Region and the Ural Federal District. The city owes its name to Empress Catherine I.
Yekaterinburg's history dates back to 1723, when the State Metallurgical Plant began operating on the Iset River. Vasily Tatishchev chose the place for its construction, the construction of the enterprise was completed under the leadership of Wilhelm de Gennin.
Since the date of its foundation, Yekaterinburg has always been the center of industrial production and machine building. Today, the industrial sector continues to be one of the most important in the city's economy.
On the occasion of the city's anniversary, on April 4, 2023, the Bank of Russia issued a commemorative 3-ruble silver commemorative coin under the name "300th anniversary of the foundation of Yekaterinburg", belonging to the "Cities" series.
The reverse of the coin shows relief images of the municipal administration building and the Yekaterinburg coat of arms, as well as a stone with a lizard on the Yekaterinburg cityscape; and the relief inscriptions in the upper left semicircle 'ЕКАТЕРИНБУРГ' (YEKATERINBURG) and '300 ЛЕТ' (300 YEARS) below in two lines.
The obverse of the coin shows a relief image of the Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation, on the edge is the semicircular inscription 'РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ' (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) framed on both sides by interlocking rhombuses. Below the coat of arms there are indications of the precious metal and its fineness on the left, and the fine metal content and the mintmark on the right, at the bottom, in the center, in three lines, is the inscription 'БАНК РОССИИ' (BANK OF RUSSIA), the denomination of the coin '3 РУБЛЯ' (3 RUBLES) and the year of issue '2023'.
