The Bank of Russia (Банк России) continues the “Inventions of Russia” series, this time issuing a silver 3 ruble facial coin dedicated to the famous Shukhov Tower Water Tower in Polibino.

Shukhov Tower

Vladimir Shukhov, a leading Russian and Soviet engineer, architect, and inventor, designed the first hyperboloid tower. A 32-meter water tower that he presented in 1896 at the All-Russian Art and Industrial Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. The structure had a viewing platform at the top, accessible via a spiral staircase.

After the exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir Shukhov was flooded with orders. The engineer designed and built hundreds of water towers, several railway bridges, and compiled a new water supply project for Moscow.

Thus, the hyperboloid of the famous engineer inspired the construction of the famous Shukhov TV transmission tower, the Stanislav-Adzhyhol lighthouse and six hyperboloid pylons for power lines on the Oka River.

 

The reverse of the coin features an image of the water tower rising above the treetops, designed in relief and laser-treated for a matte finish. We also see the inscriptions «ВОДОНАПОРНАЯ БАШНЯ» (WATER TOWER) around the top of the piece, «В.Г. ШУХОВА» (VG SHUKHOV) and «ЛИПЕЦКАЯ ОБЛАСТЬ» (LIPETSK REGION), as well as the year «1896», the date when the first water tower was presented.

 

While on the obverse of the piece there is a relief image of the Russian Coat of Arms, and a semicircular inscription at the top «РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ» (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) framed with diamonds on both sides. Under the shield, we see the chemical symbol of the metal used and its purity, and on the opposite side its content. There is also the mint mark, the inscription «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA), the face value «3 РУБЛЯ» (3 RUBLES), and the date of issue «2023 г.» (2023).
