On June 26, the United States Mint will issue a new coin in the American Innovation series, this being its third coin of 2023 and the twentieth in the collection. The new currency recognizes the State of Indiana and its automotive industry.

Indiana boasts a long history of innovation in automobile manufacturing and the promotion of the automobile in American culture. They played a role in inventing, perfecting, and manufacturing automobile headlights, rearview mirrors, tilt steering, cruise control, tires, and heaters. Indiana produced a large number of auto parts manufacturing companies and automobile producers, including Marmon, Studebaker, Milburn Wagon Works, and Duesenberg.

Indiana also promoted the automobile into American popular culture through car racing. The Indianapolis 500 is one of the oldest automobile races in the world. Indianapolis 500 creator Carl Fisher also envisioned the Lincoln Highway, the first car-specific transcontinental highway across the United States.

The coin's reverse design features a series of vehicles showcasing Indiana innovations of yesterday and today. From top to bottom, the design includes a vintage gas-powered car, a production rendering of classic cars, and a recent model IndyCar Series race car.

Designer: Ronald D. Sanders
Sculptor-Printmaker: Phebe Hemphill

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring an image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." (IN GOD WE TRUST).
