A few days ago the National Bank of Hungary issued a new collector's coin dedicated to commemorating the bicentenary of the birth of the Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi. This piece will be available in two versions, one for 30,000 florins in silver, and another for 7,500 florins in cupronickel.
Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849) was a Hungarian poet, revolutionary, national hero, one of the most iconic figures in Hungarian literature and culture. His poems were translated into most languages in Hungarian poetry. In his short life, the internationally renowned poet wrote almost a thousand poems, and was one of the first literary figures to earn a living from his writing. He started the concept of the literary icon. As the embodiment of Hungarian romanticism, he introduced new themes into Hungarian poetry, such as family poetry, the representation of Puszta (Hungarian landscapes) and the idea of a free world. His exceptional popularity was also due to the fact that he used simple language in his works and incorporated the language of the people into literature. He was one of the main figures of the «Youth of March».
The obverse of the collector coin, in reference to the time of the outbreak of the revolution, shows the image of a printing press in which the date “1848” is hidden. We also see the inscriptions “MAGYARORSZÁG”, the denominations 30,000 and 7,500 FORINT, the mark of the mint “BP.” and the year of issue “2023”, as well as the mark of the obverse designer and sculptor Zoltán Kovács.
While on the reverse we see the iconic literary figure of Petőfi taking a leading role, with a quote that can be interpreted as the poet's creed and the motifs that reinforce it. We also see a portrait of the "per fiery poet" based on an 1846 ink drawing by Miklós Barabás. To the right of the portrait, in two lines, is the inscription “PETŐFI SÁNDOR” with a handwritten quote from his poem “A természet vadvirága” (Nature's Wild Flower): “A korláttalan természet Vadvirága vagyok én” (I am the wild flower of nature without limits). On the left edge of the piece, in a legend, the years 1823-1849, the years of birth and death of Sándor Petőfi, are placed, and hidden in the poet's clothing is the mark of the reverse designer Andrea Horváth.
