In Italy they are preparing to celebrate the Centenary of the Aeronautica Militare, the name by which the Italian Air Force is known, in 2023. This was founded on March 28, 1923 and is one of the four branches that make up the Italian Armed Forces.

One of the recognitions that will be given to the Italian Air Force is the issuance of a commemorative 2-euro coin that will be issued in January of next year and that will have an issue volume of 3 million coins, a volume more enough so that it can be found in the pockets of the Italians and by the rest of the citizens of the eurozone.


The design of the coin is based on the logo designed for the anniversary.

The logo created by Francesco Simone, called "Per omnia Coela", (In all heavens), was chosen to honor the Italian men and women who have served l'Arma Azzurra for 100 years.

This presents the essential elements, expressively collects the concept of the Centenary represented by the number "100" and by the reference to the two dates (1923-2023). The two zeros, which represent the shock waves caused by an aircraft exceeding the speed of sound, refer to the futuristic style.

To complete the symbology, the semicircle in the lower right represents the sense of continuity in the history of the Air Force. A graphic resource that finds in the presence of two planes, one of which dates back to the time of the constitution of the Armed Forces and the other contemporary, the culmination of an ideal historical path that, as indicated by the direction of the flight, yesterday as today sees the Air Force always aiming for new and higher horizons for the good and exclusive service of Italy.

The Aeronautica Militare is the current air force of Italy, one of the four components of the Italian Armed Forces. Although previously existing under some names such as Servizio Aeronautico or Arma Azzurra, it was founded as an independent branch on March 28, 1923 by royal decree of King Victor Emmanuel III under the name Regia Aeronautica (Royal Aeronautics). The current name, Aeronautica Militare, was given after World War II, in 1946, when Italy was established as a republic.

At present, the Aeronautica Militare can be considered one of the most powerful in Europe and in the world, from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. Its most modern aircraft include Eurofighters EF-2000 fighters and Tornado IDS/ECR fighter-bombers. The number of troops in service is around 50,000.
