With just over a month left in the year, the Vatican has officially presented the first numismatic issues of 2025: euro sets that include the 2025 minted circulation coins, struck in Uncirculated (Under Mint) quality. One of the sets contains the eight coins of the regular circulation series, while the other also includes a bimetallic 5-euro coin, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the death of Saint John Paul II.

It is worth noting that these will be the last circulating coins to feature the coat of arms of Pope Francis. From 2026 onwards, the designs will adopt the motifs corresponding to Pope Leo XIV.

The final series of coins from Pope Francis's pontificate, planned shortly before his death, possesses a profound symbolic value. More than ever, this collection takes on a deep commemorative meaning: a tangible tribute to his life and legacy, destined to endure.

The series comprises eight denominations—2 and 1 euro, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 cent—which retain on their reverse the characteristics common to all countries in the eurozone. On the obverse, all the coins feature the coat of arms of Pope Francis, the inscription “Città del Vaticano” (Vatican City), and the traditional circle of twelve stars.

Vatican Euroset 2025 FDC with 5 euro coin

The bimetallic 5 euro coin included in this expanded edition commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the death of Saint John Paul II, a Pontiff who traveled the world as a tireless pilgrim, bringing the light of the Gospel to all peoples. The scene depicts him advancing with a determined stride and open arms: a gesture that is simultaneously an embrace, a blessing, and a welcome. His vestments billow in the wind, as if that journey, in essence, had never truly ended.

The artist Orietta Rossi complements this image with a stylized crowd emerging behind him: raised arms, outstretched hands, faces barely suggested yet recognizable in each of us. They are the young people who followed him at World Youth Day, but also the most vulnerable, who found in him a voice, a refuge, and a hope.

This coin does not close a chapter: it opens one, wide and luminous, like the arms of the Pope himself who even today seems to repeat, without needing words: "Do not be afraid. Open, yes, open wide the doors to Christ."

This euro set also includes the complete series of the eight regular circulation values with a mint date of 2025.
