With the arrival of the festive season and the Christmas magic that begins to envelop everything, the endearing character created by Raymond Briggs returns again this year thanks to The Royal Mint, dedicating a new commemorative issue to this lovable snowman.
Briggs's popular winter tale has become a true symbol of Christmas. Every year, millions of families gather to enjoy the classic animated film The Snowman and its enchanting sequel, The Snowman and the Snowdog, keeping alive a tradition that has become an integral part of the British Christmas spirit. More than four decades after its release, The Snowman continues to captivate children and adults alike, evoking the excitement and wonder that characterize this time of year.
Since 2018, commemorative coins dedicated to The Snowman have become an annual tradition for The Royal Mint, with the first release achieving immediate success: all 15,000 units of the silver Proof version sold out on the first day. Since then, each new edition has returned punctually to become the institution's official Christmas coin.
The 2025 issue comes in several versions that differ in quality, material, and presentation format. However, they all share the same artwork. In this article, we'll focus on the most affordable option in the collection, and at the end, you'll find a direct link to explore the other variants available in The Royal Mint's official shop.
The reverse of the piece features a charming scene starring little James, who appears in front of a Christmas tree helping his inseparable snowman friend to place the festive lights that illuminate the fir tree.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings. Surrounding his bust are inscriptions indicating the face value, the year of issue “2025”, and the Latin abbreviations “DG REX. FD”, corresponding to Dei Gratia Rex and Fidei Defensor—expressions that mean “King by the Grace of God” and “Defender of the Faith.”
Like previous coins in the collection, the cupronickel version without color application comes inside a cute greeting card, making it an ideal gift to celebrate Christmas and share with family or friends.
