The sixth and final 50-colón coin in the Ecosystems Fauna series will be issued in Costa Rica on November 26. This coin features the Andean rabbit of the Talamanca mountain range. This collection highlights the country's natural wealth. As with previous coins, this one is available in both collector's and regular circulation versions.

Coin Design and Characteristics

The coin, with a face value of 50 colones (approximately 9 euro cents), has a notable distinction between its versions. The collector's version has colored details, while the circulating version does not. This coin is part of the new monetary system of the Central Bank of Costa Rica, which means that its size and characteristics differ from the 50-colon coins currently in circulation.

The reverse of the new coin features the words "Páramo," "Conejo de monte" (original name), and "Sylvilagus dicei" (scientific name). As part of the visual elements, the small mammal is placed on a portion of the páramo map, along with the year "2023," when the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) approved its design.

The legends "Republic of Costa Rica" and "Central Bank of Costa Rica" stand out at the top of the obverse of the coin, as well as the three bars at the bottom in high relief that facilitate its recognition.

About the Wild Rabbit

This rabbit is small: its tail and ears are relatively short. It is a species that lives at altitudes of 1,100 meters above sea level, primarily in the páramo (high-altitude grassland) of La Amistad International Park, a protected transboundary area between Costa Rica and Panama.

It is a crepuscular and nocturnal species, frequenting humid forests, moorlands, and grasslands in search of plant matter to feed on. Internationally, it is considered endangered, but in Costa Rica it is common and is found mainly in protected wilderness areas.

The series

The coin is part of a larger collection titled "Fauna of Ecosystems," which consists of six coins designed to represent diverse species from Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. The other coins in the collection are:

The morpho butterfly (tropical cloud forest)
The long-legged frog (tropical rainforest)
Hawksbill turtle (coral reef)
The lizard or anole (dry tropical forest)
The mangrove crab
The mountain rabbit (moorland)
