On May 20, the Bank of Greece will issue a gold collector's coin to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis, a Greek composer known for both his music and his political activism.

On a date yet to be determined, a commemorative 2-euro coin will be issued on the same theme and with a very similar design.

Mikis Theodorakis (1925-2021) was a prominent 20th-century Greek composer and one of the most prominent figures of modern Greece, enjoying international acclaim. His life, linked to the struggles and vision of the left, as well as to the resistance to the military junta of 1967-1974, was marked by persecution, imprisonment, torture, and exile. He was active in Greek politics, serving as president of the Lambrakis Youth Movement and later as a member of parliament and minister.

His vast oeuvre spans all musical genres: symphony, chamber music, opera, ballet, film and theatre scores, as well as countless songs. Blending folk and Byzantine elements with his solid classical training, he was a pioneer of the entechno ("witty") popular song, as he called it. Importantly, he set to music the poetry of Yiannis Ritsos ( Epitaphios , Romiosini ), Odysseus Elytis ( The Axion Esti ), Giorgos Seferis ( Epiphany ), Lorca, Neruda, and others. Epic and lyrical, Greek and universal, Theodorakis was adored by the Greek people, and his work is a national treasure.

The obverse depicts Mikis Theodorakis conducting an orchestra, with his characteristic expression and gesture at the head of a spiral of musical notes. In the center of the composition appears the year of issue, “2025,” accompanied by the palmette, the symbol of the Hellenic Mint. Around it, in Greek characters, one can read the legend: “100 CHIONIA APO TO GENNSAI TO MY KINDLE ΘΕΟΔΩΡΑΚΗ” (100 years since the birth of Mikis Theodorakis).

The reverse is dominated by a large treble clef that blends into the coin's radial background. On the right is the face value "200 ΕΥΡΩ" (200 euros), while in the center, above the Hellenic national coat of arms, is the inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic).
