The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) announces the issuance of a new coin depicting the hawksbill turtle, one of the most emblematic species of Costa Rican biodiversity. This coin is the third edition in the "Fauna of Ecosystems" series, which celebrates the rich fauna of the country's diverse ecosystems. The new coin will be officially issued on Monday, May 26, 2025, and will be available in both collector and circulation versions.

Design and Features of the Coin

The coin, with a face value of 50 colones (approximately 9 euro cents), features a notable distinction between its versions. The collector's version has colored details, while the circulation version does not. This coin is part of the Central Bank of Costa Rica's new monetary cone, which means its size and characteristics differ from the 50 colones currently in circulation.

The reverse of the new coin features the text "Coral Reef" and the original scientific name "Carsbill Turtle" and "Eretmochelys imbricata." As part of the visual elements, the hawksbill turtle is placed on a portion of the coral reef map, as well as the year of approval "2023" of the design by the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Costa Rica.

On the obverse of the coin, the legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica" are read, accompanied by three raised bars that allow easy tactile identification.

The Hawksbill Turtle: A Symbol of Biodiversity

The hawksbill turtle grows up to 90 centimeters long and weighs up to 75 kilograms. They can be found along the warm and temperate coasts of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans, as well as in the Caribbean Sea. In Costa Rica, they are found on both coasts, inhabiting rocky areas, coral reefs, and waters near mangroves, estuaries, and lagoons with shallow, muddy bottoms devoid of vegetation. This turtle feeds on sponges, mollusks, fish, and marine jellyfish, as well as algae, seagrass, and mangrove parts such as shoots and roots.

The "Fauna of Ecosystems" Series

The hawksbill turtle coin is part of a larger collection titled "Fauna of Ecosystems," which consists of six coins designed to represent various species of Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. The other coins in the collection are:

The morpho butterfly (tropical cloud forest)
The briefcase frog (tropical rainforest)
Hawksbill turtle (coral reef)
The lizard or anole (dry tropical forest)
The mangrove crab
The wild rabbit (moorland)
