To commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the Kingdom of Croatia, the Croatian National Bank has issued a coin, available in different versions, which we will present below, dedicated to the most famous ruler of early medieval Croatia, King Tomislav.
Tomislav was the first king of Croatia, ruling in the early 10th century. He is credited with unifying the duchies of Pannonia and Dalmatia, consolidating the Kingdom of Croatia. His reign is mentioned in historical sources such as Frankish annals and papal documents.
In 925, Pope John X recognized Tomislav as king, marking Croatia's elevation from a duchy to a kingdom. Under his leadership, Croatia achieved its greatest territorial expansion and strengthened its military, boasting a powerful fleet and an army of around 100,000 men, according to some chronicles.
Tomislav played a key role in the resistance against Hungarian expansion and the threat of the First Bulgarian Empire. His death is not precisely documented, and details of his succession remain uncertain. Despite this, he is remembered as a symbol of unity and power in Croatian history.
For this very reason, his legacy is deeply rooted in Croatian identity, and numerous streets, squares, and institutions throughout Croatia bear his name.
Design
The reverse of the coin features a bust of Tomislav in profile, looking to the right, while the reverse is decorated with the symbol of the olive tree, embodying strength, wisdom, and peace.
