The Austrian Mint, Münze Österreich, will issue the first coin in its series dedicated to promoting traditional Austrian costumes and their production using regional raw materials on April 9. The coin is intended for the iconic traditional attire known as the dirndl, a traditional costume of historical significance to Austria.
Perfectly combining tradition and rustic elegance, the dirndl is much more than a simple dress. With its voluminous skirt and cinched waist, the drindl is as much a symbol of Austrian fashion as the tracht and lederhosen.
The dirndl was traditionally made from linen. A robust and breathable material derived from the flax plant, which thrives in many parts of Austria, linen is not only durable, eco-friendly, and timelessly appealing, but also gives the dress a truly special touch. Various types of fabric are now used in the dress's construction. Combined with the wide range of colors and patterns used, this makes each dirndl unique.
The reverse of the coin depicts, in various selective color accents, a woman wearing a white linen blouse under a sleeveless dirndl with an apron over it. The apron is the centerpiece of the dirndl. In her raised left hand and basket, the woman carries flax flowers, from which the textile linen is made.
On the other hand, the obverse of the coin, along with the inscriptions of the issuing country "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA), the face value "10 EURO" and the year of issue "2025", shows various tools for processing linen and products made by hand with this fabric.
