The INCM of Portugal (Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda) has issued this March a new coin dedicated to the 900th Anniversary of the Foral of Ponte de Lima, the oldest city in Portugal, which is located in the district of Viana do Castelo. This recent issue will also be available in three different mintages with the same common design, two of which have already been issued, except for the silver coin that will be launched later in March.

The Foral was a fundamental legal instrument in the territorial and administrative organisation of the Kingdom of Portugal and its overseas domains between the 12th and 16th centuries. Granted by the monarch, its main function was to regulate the administration of the municipalities, define their boundaries and establish the rights, duties and privileges of their inhabitants.

The forales emerged in a context of territorial expansion during the Reconquista, when the Portuguese monarchy promoted the founding and consolidation of new towns. To guarantee their stability and development, the kings granted these documents, which provided a legal framework for local governance, set fiscal norms and guaranteed certain rights to the inhabitants.

The Foral of Ponte de Lima is one of the most significant documents in the administrative history of Portugal, as it marked the official creation of this town and established its legal and fiscal regime. It was granted on March 4, 1125 by Infanta Teresa de Leão, mother of the future King Afonso Henriques, making it one of the oldest forales in Portuguese territory.

Common design

• Obverse: The central image of this coin is a representation of the seal of the Countess of Portucale, D. Teresa (Teresa de Leão); on the right, a small coat of arms of Portugal; on the left, the symbol of the Camino de Santiago, since Ponte de Lima, located in the district of Viana do Castelo, is part of the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela. Surrounding the composition are the inscriptions of the coin's authors, Isabel Carriço and Fernando Branco, the year of issue "2025", the issuing country "PORTUGAL", the face value and the Portuguese mint mark "CASA DA MOEDA".

• Reverse: The centre features an image of D. Teresa, with the iconic medieval bridge of Ponte de Lima as a backdrop, symbolising the historical and cultural wealth of the region. The lower part of the composition features the inscription of the issue's motif: "900 ANOS DO FORAL DE PONTE DE LIMA" (900th Anniversary of the Foral of Ponte de Lima).
