Last May marked the 75th anniversary of the promulgation and entry into force of the German Basic Law. Initially formulated as a provisional constitution for the Federal Republic of Germany, the Basic Law has applied to the whole of Germany since the states of the former GDR joined.

To commemorate the event, a silver collector's coin has been issued, with a face value of 20 euros.

“Conscious of its responsibility before God and the people, animated by the will to serve world peace as an equal member of a united Europe, the German people, by virtue of its constitutional power, have adopted this Basic Law” – this is the initial preamble of the Basic Law, which was drafted by the Parliamentary Council in just nine months. The mission was clear: to define a political order that would allow for a democratic community under Allied control during a transitional period. The foundation stone of the German state was laid with just 146 articles, which in a very short time transformed the country from years of being an unjust state into a functioning constitutional state.

Since its entry into force, the Basic Law has taken precedence over all other German legal norms, guaranteeing fundamental rights, forming the basis of the free and democratic basic order, protecting the freedom and dignity of every individual, and representing the basis for a common political coexistence and the separation and interconnection of powers.

The reverse of the coin features the theme “75 Years of the Basic Law” with a striking composition consisting of the anniversary number and the well-known abbreviation of the Basic Law. Article 1 of the Basic Law – and thus its most important value, so to speak – is located in the upper third of the coin: “DIE WÜRDE DES MENSCHEN IST UNANTASTBAR” (THE DIGNITY OF MAN IS INVIOLABLE). These lines of text are preceded by a radial grid of dots, which are visually linked to form a circle, making an abstract allusion to the arrangement of German parliamentary seats, and at the same time, to the link between human dignity and the basic democratic order.

The obverse of the coin shows the eagle from the German Coat of Arms with its wings in an abstract form, thus referring to parliamentarism. Surrounding the composition are also the inscriptions of the face value “20 EURO”, the name of the issuing country “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (Federal Republic of Germany), the year of issue “2024”, the twelve European stars, the type of metal and its purity “silber 925”, and the mint mark “G” (Karlsruhe).
