We have a new currency issue by Ukraine, which despite the serious circumstances the country is going through, has not stopped issuing beautiful coins like the one I present to you today.
The coin, which has two versions and the same design, is dedicated to "Örnek, ornamental symbolism of the Crimean Tatars." This coin celebrates a unique ornament that is an integral part of the national identity of the Crimean Tatars. Örnek is a living heritage that for centuries has preserved its unique beauty and deep meaning and has served as a source of inspiration for artists. Each embroidered pattern or painting is a kind of message that traverses time and space, connecting the past with the present and transmitting the heritage of the town to future generations. In 2021, Ornek was officially included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The obverse of the coin shows in the center of the composition a Crimean Tatar embroiderer, a charming craftswoman bending over an embroidery machine (kergef). Her hands, masterfully handling the needle, give life to the canvas, creating exquisite Örnek patterns on it. The ornament springs in different directions from the craftsman, symbolizing the continuity of the tradition and its incessant continuation by talented descendants. Above is the semicircular legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), below which are the legends ÖRNEK / ОРЬНЕК; in the center, between the legends, is the small coat of arms of Ukraine; To the right of the craftswoman is the face value of the coin, 5 or 10, the graphic symbol of the hryvnia and the year of issue of the coin: 2024; Below, to the right of the embroidery machine, is the mint mark.
On the reverse side on a plain background there is an embossed Örnek ornament, which represents family values. At the center of the ornament are interconnected elements that reflect the deep symbolism of family ties. This family is made up of the signs of a man, a woman and her common home. On both sides of the central vertical there are symbols that represent children. Together they create a complete ornament that reflects family unity and harmony.
