The Bank of Lithuania has just issued two new coins dedicated to the famous Lithuanian fairy tale “Zuikis Puikis”, written by Eduardas Mieželaitis and belonging to the series called “Tales from my childhood”. These collector coins are issued in two denominations: €5 silver and colored coin and €1.50 cupro-nickel coin.
Zuikis Puikis is the second tale to appear in the “Stories from My Childhood” coin series. The series began in 2021 with coins dedicated to the tale “Eglė, the Queen of Serpents”.
“When designing the coins for the Zuikis Puikis tale, I wanted to see this work by Mieželaitis from another angle, giving it even more depth, so on the reverse I chose an unusual point of view: from above. It offers an overview of what is going on, but also leaves room for some mystery. I also included an additional game element closely related to the content of the story: you have to find all the letters of the Lithuanian alphabet on the coin. In this way, I wanted to underline that learning should not be a burden, but a game that naturally evokes curiosity”, commented the designer of these coins, Eglė Žemaitė.
The reverse of the coin depicts the fairy tale character Zuikis Puikis on his way to school, distracted by various fun activities until the path finally veers to the number 2 (meaning Zuikis Puikis gets a low grade of two) . The impression is reinforced by his friends having fun together and by forest animals telling the plot of this fairy tale.
On the obverse, as on the other coins in the series, there is a knitted fabric with the motif of the story: in this case, Zuikis Puikis learning the letters from A to Ž. At the bottom of the dot is the dotted inscription "Lithuania" and a symbolic silhouette of the Vytis. In the background, behind the dot, there are stars on a cozy night with a crescent moon as a girl listens to the fairy tale she has been told/knitted. The point element and the different phases of the moon will be a common feature of all the coins in this series. With each coin in the series there will be more and more stitches, and once all the coins have been collected, it will be possible to see a perfect view of the fabric.
The silver coin is coloured, while the individual relief elements of the composition are colour-coated using laser printing.
The edge of the silver coin features stylized bunnies. The edge of the copper-nickel coin is fluted.
The cupro-nickel version is sold in Lithuanian Banks for just 2 euros. While the colored silver costs 60 euros.
