A few months ago we learned that Pope Francisco had declined the invitation of the Mint of Portugal, so that his image appeared in a coin dedicated to the Centenary of the Apparitions of Fatima. Today I know that not only his refusal was for this specific currency, the Pope expressed his desire not to appear in any currency, including those of the Vatican.
All this supposes that from this 2017 will replace its image by the one of its shield. Therefore, we can already make room in our collections for a new series of Vatican euro coins, which would be the fifth after the ones of: John Paul II (2002-2005), Sede Vacante (2005), Benedict XVI (2006 - 2013) ) Francisco (2014 - 2016).
Adding that Pope Francis is not the first to make this decision, in 1970 Paul VI at the end of his pontificate also asked not to appear in the then Vatican lire.
The image that we will find in the Vatican euros since this same year is the one corresponding to its papal shield. Since Pope Innocent III, each pope of the Catholic Church has had his own shield, which has served as a badge of his papacy.
