The year 2025 marks the 650th anniversary of the Province of Utrecht, a historic event that marked the birth of provincial democracy in the Netherlands. On May 17, 1375, the Stichtse Landbrief was signed in Utrecht , a document in which the three estates—clergy, nobility, and citizens—were given a voice for the first time in decisions regarding government, justice, taxation, and war. The agreement was instigated by Bishop Arnoud van Horne, who, in need of financial resources, was forced to negotiate with the representatives of the territory. Although the motive was practical, the result was a decisive step toward a more participatory form of government that is still celebrated today as a symbol of democratic values.

To pay tribute to this anniversary, the Royal Netherlands Mint has issued the 2025 Mint Day Set, a special edition dedicated entirely to the 650th anniversary of the Province of Utrecht. The set contains the eight 2025 Dutch euro coins in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality, along with a commemorative medal designed specifically for this occasion.

The obverse of the medal features a representation of the province of Utrecht divided into its 26 municipalities. The reverse features the provincial coat of arms accompanied by the text "650 jaar samen" (650 years together), all framed by an elegant decoration. The coins and medal are presented in special packaging that provides additional information (in Dutch) about the history and significance of this anniversary.

This commemorative set is limited to 1,000 pieces. Its retail price in the Netherlands is €39.95.

It's worth remembering that, in addition to this special edition, the standard Euroset with the Netherlands' circulation coins in BU quality was also launched in January 2025.
