Issued on June 17 by the Italian Mint, this new collector coin honors the centenary of the birth of the distinguished journalist, historian, and internationally renowned politician Giovanni Spadolini. It recognizes his significant intellectual contribution and civic commitment to the Italian historical and cultural landscape.

Giovanni Spadolini

Giovanni Spadolini (1925–1994) was one of the most important figures in the Italian political and intellectual scene of the 20th century. A historian, journalist, and politician, Spadolini was noted for his commitment to republican values, his defense of democratic institutions, and his profound interest in Italian culture.

Born in Florence on June 21, 1925, he began his career as a historian specializing in the Risorgimento and later established himself as a prestigious journalist, serving as editor of major newspapers such as Il Resto del Carlino and Il Corriere della Sera. His move into politics took shape in the 1970s, when he joined the Italian Republican Party (PRI), of which he served as national secretary.

In 1981, Giovanni Spadolini made history by becoming the first Prime Minister of Italy not belonging to the Christian Democrats since the end of World War II. His term, although brief (1981–1982), symbolized a political opening in Italy during the First Republic. He subsequently held important institutional positions, including Minister of Culture, Minister of Defense, and President of the Senate.

Beyond his political career, Spadolini left an important legacy as a liberal thinker and reformer. He promoted the rigorous study of contemporary Italian history, leaving behind a vast body of work that remains a required reference for scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The obverse of the coin features Giovanni Spadolini in the center. Surrounding his image is the inscription of the issuing country, "Repubblica Italiana," on the edge. To the left is the letter "R," identifying the Rome Mint, and the year of issue, "2025." At the bottom of the composition, we see the artist's signature, "V. DE SETA" (Valerio De Seta).

The reverse of the coin features a central image of the Senate of the Italian Republic. Framing it is the inscription "Giovanni Spadolini" and the years "1925" and "2025." The coin's face value, "5 EURO," is also found in the lower part of the design.
