On March 18, the Bank of Slovakia issued a new silver coin with a face of 10 euros to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Slovak actor Jozef Kroner.
Jozef Kroner (March 20, 1924 – March 12, 1998) began his professional career at the Martin Theater. Working there from 1948 to 1956, he learned from the characters he portrayed to look for their humanity and their essential motivations. He soon established himself as an actor capable of doing justice to complex characters, whether conveying the private or social side of him. He also stood out in the interpretation of comic characters, with performances that exuded a sparkling and contagious humor. His work at the Slovak National Theater from 1956 to 1984 further enhanced the compelling and humanizing power of his performance, which fully resonated in his work on radio, television and film. For his portrayal of Tóno Brtko in the film The Shop on Main Street (Obchod na korze), he received a special mention at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival (the film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966 ). In 1978 he was awarded the title of National Artist, and in 2018 he was posthumously awarded the Pribina Cross.
The obverse of the coin depicts a horizontal strip of film in reference to the film and television work of Jozef Kroner. In the center of the design, above the central frame of the strip, there is a representation of Tóno Brtko, the character played by Kroner in the film The Shop on Main Street. The left side of the strip is mostly covered by a stylized comedy-tragedy mask, stage boards, and a theater curtain, in reference to the fact that Kroner spent much of his professional life in the theater. In the right frame the coat of arms of Slovakia appears and, just above it, the year of issue, "2024". Below the shield appears the mark of the Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica), formed by the letters "MK" placed between two dies, and the stylized initials "TL", in reference to the designer of the coin, Tomáš Lamač. At the top of the design is the name of the issuing country, "SLOVENSKO", and at the bottom, the denomination and currency, "10 EURO".
The reverse of the coin shows a portrait of Jozef Kroner and a facsimile of his signature below. Between the signature and the bottom edge is a small cartoonish image of a fish, in reference to Kroner's passion for fishing. To the left of the portrait appears the name "JOZEF KRONER", above his surname, and to the right the dates of his birth and death, "1924" and "1998", one above the other.
