On January 25, the first coin of 2024 and the twenty-second coin in the American Innovation series was issued, a coin that recognizes the State of Illinois and the invention of the steel plow. The invention of the steel plow sparked the migration of Americans to the American Midwest in the 19th century and the beginning of the industrial era of agriculture.
In the early 19th century, Americans moved from the eastern United States to the Midwest. The land they found was covered with grasslands that were difficult to plow. Wooden plows that easily cut through the sandy soil of the East Coast were getting stuck in the dense grass of the Midwest.
Blacksmith John Lane of Homer Township, Illinois, devised a solution: make a plow from an old sawmill blade, polished so it wouldn't get stuck in the ground. After field testing, Lane's plow went into production, first on his farm and later in Lockport, Illinois. By the 1850s, his plow was a commercial success, although Lane never patented his invention.
Lane was one of many competing plow makers during this era. The steel plow was first marketed in 1837 by John Deere in Grand Detour, Illinois. The John Deere plow was also originally made from a sawmill blade. But instead of making them one at a time, as Lane and others did, John Deere established a process to produce plows on an industrial scale.
The reverse design features a large steel plow blade attached to its wooden support. Behind the plow appear some Big Bluestem prairie grasses with a field of fertile soil below.
Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions “$1” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” (IN GOD WE TRUST).
The coins of this series show the year of minting or issue, the mint mark and the text “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (of many, one) on the edge of the coins.
