This year the commemorative 2 euro coin issued by Latvia is dedicated to the "Himmeli", an artisan and typical Christmas decoration popular in northern Europe.Thanks to our colleague Paul (Euromunter) we are going to learn about the design of this new currency and some more information regarding the issuance.
About the coin motif
Himmeli are an ancient Latvian Christmas decoration. Its traditional shape is that of an eight-sided polyhedron, which consists of 12 interconnected straws and symbolizes the year with its 12 months, which is why the himmeli is one of the oldest Christmas decorations, since it was used before the Christmas tree. Christmas.
The coin
The author of the coin design is the Latvian artist Ieva Krūmiņa. In the same figure, a stylized image of a Himmeli ornament appears as the central motif. At the bottom left appears the name of the issuing country “LATVIJA” (LATVIA), and at the bottom right the year of issue “2024”.
The edge of the coin, like all 2 euro circulation coins of the Republic of Latvia, will feature the inscription “DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU *” (God bless Latvia).

Data on its issuance
The volume of issue will be 413,000 coins, of which 400,000 will be in rolls of 25 pieces intended for circulation, and 13,000 in BU quality and special presentation, coincard type, intended for collectors. What we don't know yet is the expected release date.
