Few will be the people who do not remember one of the most iconic figures of the cinema of the 80s, ET the Extraterrestrial, main character of the film of the same name released in the summer of 1982. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, two coins with the same design made up of one ounce of gold or one ounce of silver.
According to Stephen Spielberg, the concept of ET evolved from a question he asked himself about what would happen if an alien from his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind had stayed on our planet as some kind of exchange student. He then envisioned the character from the perspective of his own childhood and the loneliness he felt during his parents' divorce. Thus, ET was created as a nice extraterrestrial being who stayed on Earth, but helped by young Elliot to return home. In the course of this meeting, a special friendship would emerge between the two characters and would delight audiences around the world.
ET The Extra Terrestrial premiered for the first time on May 26, 1982 at the Cannes Film Festival and later on June 11, 1982 in the United States. Its success was immediate, surpassing even the first Star Wars film as the highest-grossing film of all time.
The reverse of the coin features an officially licensed image of ET raising his finger while pointing to his heart with the opposite hand. To the left of ET is the 40th anniversary logo. To the right of ET is the movie logo. Along the edge is the copyright of Universal City Studios LLC along with the weight and purity of the metal.
The obverse features the iconic full moon scene with the silhouette of Elliott and ET flying on bikes. Niue's coat of arms, as well as the face value and year of issue, appear at the bottom of the moon face, which occupies the entire obverse.
There are two versions with the same design for the coin, in one ounce of silver or one ounce of gold.
