In 2022, the FA Cup celebrates the 150th anniversary of its first final, which took place between Wanderers FC and Royal Engineers on 16 March 1872. To commemorate this special milestone in world football's oldest knockout competition, The Royal The Mint has just issued the first UK coin to celebrate the anniversary of this prestigious sporting competition.

The FA Cup is a favorite among fans of the beautiful game, and its unique knockout structure gives smaller clubs the chance to take on the higher-ups of the footballing pyramid. No matter how slim the odds, the FA Cup brings a magical feel to every ground it passes through. There is no denying the hope that something extraordinary will happen during the 90 minutes and possibly beyond. Little ones defeat giants, unknowns become global heroes overnight, and a moment of magic can mean the difference between agonizing disappointment and undeniable elation. It is a competition steeped in sporting history that continues to add unforgettable moments to the rich tapestry of football folklore.

The coin features as its main motif a design by Matt Dent and Christian Davies of the famous trophy.

The FA Cup trophy, which has become an iconic symbol of sporting excellence, has taken many physical forms since the tournament's inception in 1871. While the name of the club that wins the prestigious trophy each year is written on the rich annals of the football legend, the trophy itself belongs to the FA and is only on loan. Five trophies have been used in the competition to date, and it's fair to say that all of them have taken their share of beatings in the post-final celebrations, and one was even stolen while on display in a Birmingham shop window in 1895.

The obverse of the 2 pound coin features the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
