The Vienna Philharmonic one ounce gold coin is the queen of investment coins. Introduced in 1989, along with the 1/4 ounce version, the one ounce coin has a face value of 100 euros and contains one troy ounce (31.1 grams). The troy ounce is the unit of weight of precious metals trading and the classic weight of bullion coins.
First issued in October 1989, the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is the most successful investment coin in Europe. According to the World Gold Council, it was the world's best-selling gold coin in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000. Given its success, it seems strange to think that the coin in its current design has never seen the light of day.
Coin history and design
In November 1998, a change in Austrian law allowed the issuance of pure gold coins for investment purposes. Thus came the idea of designing a gold coin to symbolize Austria. Numerous possible themes for the coin were debated until music was voted on, a harmonious ambassador whose language is understood around the world. And what better to symbolize music than the world famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra?
The coin was designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, chief engraver at the Austrian Mint. For the reverse he chose eight characteristic orchestral instruments: four violins alongside a cello in the foreground and the Viennese horn, bassoon and harp behind. The obverse features the famous pipe organ of the Viennese Musikverein's Goldener Saal (golden hall), renowned throughout the world as the backdrop for the Philharmonic's New Year's concerts. The organ case was designed by the architect Theophil von Hansen, who was responsible for the entire building. The original organ was built by Friedrich Ladegast in 1872 and since then the organ has been renovated and replaced several times, most recently in 2011. Visually, the body of the organ remains unchanged despite technical alterations. Above the organ the words “Republik Oesterreich” are placed in a semicircle, while the weight and purity of the coin, with the date of issue below, are placed below the organ balustrade. On the lower edge of the coin appears its nominal value. The edge of the coin is fluted.
Legal tender and duty-free currency
The enduring motif of the coin has contributed to its international appeal. Much has also been sold in Austria itself, as gold investment has always been popular with its citizens. One way to visualize the success of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is to imagine that if all the coins sold in history were stacked on top of each other, they would exceed 8,850 meters of Mount Everest. In fact, they would form a pillar more than 15,000 meters high.

The runaway success of the world famous Vienna Philharmonic investment coin is not limited to its golden manifestation. Minted in pure silver, the silver Vienna Philharmonic has also proven to be a top seller among investors.
When the Austrian Mint first issued silver Vienna Philharmonic coins in February 2008, it was the first time a 99.9% pure silver European investment coin had been released on the market. The market had been waiting for a product of these characteristics for a long time and, one month after the date of issue, the millionth coin was minted. By the end of 2008, eight million Vienna Philharmonic coins in silver had been sold. Since the start of sales on February 1, 2008, this silver coin has been minted exclusively in the 1 ounce version and in quantity linked to market demand.

Several million sold each year
Given the enthusiastic reception of the Vienna Philharmonics in gold among investors around the world, it was decided that a virtually identical version of Thomas Pesendorfer's original design for the gold coins would also appear on the silver coins. A full ounce of silver at an attractive price: perfect for investment, collecting and gift giving.
