New coin and new design that continues to make us enjoy numismatics in an easy and inexpensive piece to acquire. I am referring to a new installment of the "America the Beautiful Quarter" series, fourth of this 2020, dedicated to the "Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park." This 25-cent coin is issued as a circulation coin by the United States Mint on September 21 and is a plea for the care and conservation of forests.
Nestled among the hills and pastures of east-central Vermont, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is the only national park that tells the history of conservation and biological evolution of the land in the United States. The park was established in 1992, recognizes the contributions and birthplace of George Perkins Marsh, environmental pioneer, author, statesman, lawyer, and linguist.
Also in recognition of the contributions of Frederick Billings, conservationist, pioneer in reforestation and scientific farm management, lawyer, philanthropist, and railroad builder, who extended the principles of land management introduced by Marsh. Lastly, to preserve the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Mansion and its surrounding lands and recognize the significant contributions of Julia Billings, Mary Billings French, Mary French Rockefeller, and Laurance Spelman Rockefeller in perpetuating the Marsh-Billings heritage.
Today, the park tries to involve visitors in the care, conservation and management of natural spaces in their communities and beyond.
Donna Weaver's design depicts a girl finishing planting a Norway spruce seedling near an established tree, thus continuing the life cycle of the forest. The girl represents conservationists seeking to maintain a sustainable forest for future enjoyment and education. The design includes the legend "LAND STEWARDSHIP". Additional inscriptions are "MARSH-BILLINGS-ROCKEFELLER", "VERMONT", "2020" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM".
On the obverse of all coins in the series, President George Washington is depicted, in a version restored by John Flanagan in 2010 from the original portrait used in 1932 in the Washington Quarter.
