The Royal Canadian Mint, The Royal Canadian Mint, announces the release of a $ 2 face bimetallic coin to commemorate the "75th anniversary of the end of World War II." The peculiarity of this coin, although it is already becoming commonplace, is that it can be obtained in two versions, one "normal" and the other colored.
The coin is inspired by the iconic 'V' for Victoria on the 1943 Thomas Shingles-designed Canadian coin known as the Victory Nickel. The "V" in the inner core of the coin was, at the time, a call to support the effort being made by Canadian troops. The letter is overlaid with a flaming torch and flanked by maple leaves on either side bearing the dates 1945 and 2020, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
. The words VICTORY and VICTOIRE appear on the outer ring, much like a message engraved in Morse code. "Goodwill is a guarantee of victory", the same message that appeared in times of war in the song of Victory Nickel.
The Victory Nickel was introduced in 1943, a year marked by the darkest period of the Battle of the Atlantic and the successful invasion of Sicily. This 5 cent coin underwent the change of course of the war in 1944 that took Canadian troops to the beaches of Normandy and northwestern Europe, also when the invasion of Okinawa took place in May 1945. And it was still circulating on 2 September 1945, when Canadians celebrated Japan's formal surrender and were finally able to think of peace.
Of the 3 million coins that make up the issue, 2 million are colored. The coins are already being circulated throughout Canada.
The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt in 2003.
