150 Years of the Holocaust at the Monastery of Arkadi
Arkadi Monastery is an Orthodox monastery, located on the island of Crete. Destroyed by the Ottomans in 1866, it was rebuilt later.
Arkady was an active center and a major center of resistance against the Ottoman occupation, reason that made him famous. Crete during the revolt of 1866, 943 Greeks found refuge in him-resistant, most were women and children. After three days of fighting, and under the orders of the superior of the monastery, the hegumen Gabriel, the Cretans blew up barrels of gunpowder, preferring to sacrifice before the surrender.
