A couple of weeks out from Rio 2016, New Zealand issued two “Road to Rio” coins to celebrate this year’s Summer Olympics: a 30 mm, 1/2 ounce, .9999 fine gold $10 and a 40 mm, 1 ounce, .999 fine silver $1. Mintages are 250 and 2016, respectively. The coins were struck by BH Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt GmbH.
The common reverse design by New Zealand Post’s Jonathan Gray shows the Olympic torch and New Zealand Olympic Committee logo standing proud alongside the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) overlooking Rio. In the background are the stars of the Southern Cross, a feature of the flags of both New Zealand and Brazil.
The obverse image is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
