10 ducats 1577, Hermannstadt, Christoph Báthori, authenticated and graded by NGC as About Uncirculated 55, crowned armorial shield with angel supporters, rev. VIRTVS / VNITA / VALET, legend around.

Born in 1530, Christoph was the voivode, of the central principality of medieval Romania, after the passing of his brother, Stephen. He was the father of Sigismund, another ruler from this royal household who is well known by numismatists. Territorial and religious battles dominated this part of central Europe for centuries, and the seizing of treasure was part and parcel of the struggles. This large gold coin, representing much wealth in its day, was likely made of gold previously fashioned into the coins of numerous former rulers, possibly even of the Turks of the Ottoman Empire, to which its style is not dissimilar.
