The Portuguese Mint issued a new coin of high symbolic value yesterday, April 21: an 8 euro coin minted in 1/4 ounce of gold, which inaugurates the category of "flagship coin" of the country.
This issue is part of the Portuguese Mint's objective to position the country prominently in the international numismatic scene. The coin is also available in a second version: a 30-euro coin minted in 1 ounce of gold.
The so-called "flag coin" was created with the aim of becoming an ambassador of Portuguese historical and cultural identity through its coin design. With this initiative, Portugal intends to consolidate its presence in the main international coin collecting and numismatic circuits.
As planned, this currency will have annual issues starting in 2026.

Obverse
The obverse of the coin, designed by Baiba Šime, features the Cross of Christ, an element with Templar roots that became established as a symbol of Portuguese sovereignty from the 14th century onwards, during the reign of King Dinis. Initially used by the Knights of the Order of Christ, this cross gained prominence on the sails of Portuguese ships during the Age of Discovery, becoming one of the most recognizable symbols of the Portuguese presence in the world, still visible today on the sails of the Navy, the aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force, and the kit of the National Football Team.

Reverse
On the reverse of the coin appears the national coat of arms of Portugal, with its essential elements: the five escutcheons and the seven castles, which together reinforce the idea of continuity and sovereignty throughout history.
