Ukraine issued a new coin on December 12 to honor the engineering prowess of the Ukrainian developers of the MAGURA maritime drones, which destroyed multiple ships of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

MAGURA, the new generation of unmanned naval vehicles

The MAGURA maritime drones represent one of the most significant developments in the use of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in recent naval conflicts. Developed by Ukrainian engineers in the context of the Russian invasion that began in 2022, they have been primarily deployed in the Black Sea theater of operations.

The MAGURA systems are designed for remote operation, supported by automated navigation. Their low profile and small size, combined with their maneuverability and considerable range, allow them to operate at long distances from the Ukrainian coast. These characteristics have enabled them to approach enemy naval targets, although they are not undetectable by all modern surveillance systems.

These drones are typically equipped with explosive payloads for direct attack missions, as well as navigation and observation sensors necessary for target identification and approach. They have been used in operations against Russian warships and other high-value military targets in the Black Sea, causing confirmed damage and, in some cases, the destruction of vessels.

The MAGURA drone operations have been coordinated by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (GUR), particularly by units specializing in maritime operations. Various sources indicate that these attacks have contributed to limiting the freedom of action of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and forcing adjustments to its operational and security protocols.

One of the most innovative aspects of the MAGURA system has been its experimental use against aerial targets. In operations documented by Ukrainian authorities, variants of the drone equipped with adapted anti-aircraft weaponry reportedly participated in the downing of Mi-8 helicopters and, subsequently, at least one Russian Su-30 fighter jet over the Black Sea.

Obverse

Against a matte background, the obverse of the coin features a modern allegorical representation of the MAGURA system, depicted as a stylized female figure with bird-woman features and outstretched wings. The figure holds a sword and shield, symbolizing Ukraine's resilience and defensive capabilities. The small coat of arms of the Ukrainian state is integrated within the shield.

The design features the inscription "УКРАЇНА" (Ukraine) at the top, along with the coin's face value and the year of issue, "2025". The mint mark of the National Bank of Ukraine's Banknote Printing and Minting Department is located in the lower left corner.

Reverse

The reverse side depicts a MAGURA unmanned surface vessel advancing at high speed over the waves. Meanwhile, the upper portion of the composition incorporates a scene alluding to the neutralization of a Su-30 fighter jet, represented by elements of fire and explosion, symbolizing Ukraine's capacity to respond to the enemy, both at sea and in the air.

Below is the emblem of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR), and next to it, the inscription "MAGURA", reproduced in the style of the manufacturer's logo, underscoring the recognition of the technological development of the Ukrainian defense sector.
