The fifth and penultimate 50-colon collectible coin in the Fauna of Ecosystems series, alluding to the mangrove ecosystem's marine crab, was issued in Costa Rica on October 22. This collection highlights the country's natural wealth. As with previous pieces, the coin is available in both collector and regular circulation versions.

Design and Features of the Coin

The coin, with a face value of 50 colones (approximately 9 euro cents), features a notable distinction between its versions. The collector's version has colored details, while the circulation version does not. This coin is part of the Central Bank of Costa Rica's new monetary cone, which means its size and characteristics differ from the 50 colones currently in circulation.

The reverse of the new coin features the text "Manglar" and the original and scientific names "Cangrejo marinera" and "Goniopsis pulchra." As part of the visual elements, the crab is placed on a portion of the mangrove map, as well as the numbers "2023," corresponding to the year the design was approved by the BCCR Board of Directors.

The legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica" stand out at the top of the coin's obverse, as well as the three bars at the bottom in high relief that make it easy to recognize.

About the Sailor Crab (Goniopsis pulchra)

The sailor crab (Goniopsis pulchra) is a species of crustacean common in Costa Rica's mangrove ecosystems, especially in the Pacific and Caribbean regions. It is characterized by its dark red or purplish shell, robust claws, and long legs that allow it to move nimbly among mangrove roots.

This crab lives in the intertidal zone, where the tide rises and falls, and uses burrows in the mud or hiding places among mangrove roots for protection and moisture. It feeds primarily on decaying leaves, organic matter, and small invertebrates, thus playing an important ecological role in recycling nutrients and aerating the mangrove soil.

Furthermore, Goniopsis pulchra serves as food for birds, fish, and other animals, forming a key part of the food chain of this coastal ecosystem. Its presence is also an indicator of the health of mangroves, as they depend on a clean and well-preserved environment.

The series

The coin is part of a larger collection titled "Fauna of Ecosystems," which consists of six coins designed to represent various species of Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. The other coins in the collection are:

1. The morpho butterfly (tropical cloud forest)
2. The briefcase frog (tropical rainforest)
3. Hawksbill turtle (coral reef)
4. The lizard or anole (dry tropical forest)
5. The mangrove crab
6. The wild rabbit (moorland)
