On October 26, the Vatican issued a coin not included in its annual numismatic program, dedicated to Benedict XVI, whose death on December 31 will mark one year. It is a silver piece with a face value of 10 euros.

The artist Daniela Longo has reproduced on the reverse of the coin the fraternal embrace between Francis and Benedict XVI; The Holy Spirit rises above them, observing and protecting the two protagonists of God's designs. Pope Francis has always expressed deep respect for his predecessor: “We are brothers,” he told Benedict on March 23, 2013 at Castel Gandolfo, the first time they prayed together, beginning the tradition of meeting often on religious festivals and during public events. In the prologue of the book “God is always new” by Pope Benedict XVI, written by Pope Francis, the following words are read: “We sincerely thank God for having given us Pope Benedict XVI: with his word and his testimony, he has given us taught that through reflection, thought, study, listening, dialogue and, above all, prayer, it is possible to serve the Church and do good for all humanity.”

Benedict XVI died on December 31, 2022 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery and is buried in the Vatican Grottoes, in St. Peter's Basilica.
