There are several expeditions from different countries that are granted the discovery of what came to be considered the sixth continent, Antarctica. Taking the Russian version as good, it was discovered on January 28, 1820, by an expedition of the Russian Imperial Navy, led by Fabian von Billingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, who spot the Antarctic continent and so records it on that date. Upon the 200th anniversary of the discovery, the Bank of Russia has issued a spectacular collector's coin in silver, commemorating the bicentenary of the anniversary.
The first Russian Antarctic expedition is considered one of the most difficult in the history of navigation. During the 751-day expedition, sailors, although navigating impassable ice fields, were able not only to establish the existence of the sixth continent, but also to discover 29 islands (Peter I Island, Alexander Island, etc.), spot unique places and collect very valuable scientific data.
The coin minted in Proof quality shows on the reverse the embossed images of the sloops, small sailboats with a single stick that were used in the expedition.
