Albert Einstein, considered one of the largest and brightest brains in history lends one of his most iconic images, sticking out his tongue, to be minted in the smallest gold coin issued in the world to date. With a diameter of only 2.96 mm and a weight of 0.063 g, the Swiss Mint, Swissmint, today issued January 23, 2020, a currency that exceeds the limits of technology and achieves something unique.

For the obverse of the smallest gold coin in the world, Swissmint was inspired by Albert Einstein, especially for his patience and determination. From 1895 to 1914, Einstein lived mainly in Switzerland, where he also completed his studies in 1900. In 1901, he was granted Swiss citizenship and in 1902 he found permanent employment as a technical expert at the Bern Patent Office. It was in 1905 when he published what is probably the most famous formula in the world: E = mc2.

The obverse of the smallest coin in the world presents the famous image of Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue and the date of the year of issuance 2020. The reverse shows the nominal value of 1/4 franc along with the inscription "Helvetia" and the Swiss cross , supplemented by the alloy brand «AU 999.9» and the weight (1/500 ounce). The new gold coin of 1/4 franc, of which only 999 pieces have been minted, has been designed by the Swissmint engraver Remo Mascherini.

So that the buyers of the tiny coin can see it correctly, it comes in a special presentation created for the occasion, since none of the images present on both sides can be seen with the naked eye. Therefore, the Swissmint has commissioned a special packaging equipped with magnifying glasses and light, ensuring that the smallest gold coin in the world can be admired while it is stored in a secure way.

This issuance consists of 999 coins, a good part have been put up for sale in the online store of the Swiss Mint, where they have sold out within a few hours. The sale price has been 199 Swiss francs (186 euros), but surely no one will find it at that price, speculation will make it rise strongly.
