In 2009, Slovakia enters the euro, leaving its national currency, the Slovakian crown, which in turn was in force since 1993, the year of Slovakia's independence. Already in its first year within the euro, it issued its first 2-euro commemorative coin on its own, apart from the common one dedicated to the "10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union". The theme to be commemorated was the "Twentieth Anniversary of November 17, 1989 (Day of the struggle for freedom and democracy)" which wished to make a nod to the so-called Velvet Revolution, a peaceful movement by which the party Communist of Czechoslovakia lost the monopoly of power and returned to democracy. set of keys, in memory of the demonstration of November 17, 1989, when the citizens paraded waving their keys to make noise, which marked the beginning of the «Revolution of Velvet". Under the motive on the right, the artist's brand, (Pavel Károly), and that of the Slovak Coin Factory (Mincovna Kremnica). Around the motive, above: the legend «17 NOVEMBER SLOBODA - DEMOKRACIA» (freedom and democracy) and the dates «1989-2009», below: the indication of the issuing country, «SLOVENSKO». The twelve stars of the European Union are represented in the circular crown.

1,000,000 of this currency were issued. Most of them in rolls of 25 coins, although it could also be obtained in the following presentations:

7,000 were presented on coincard at the price of € 7.5
Special and very limited coincard dedicated to the author of the design
A very exclusive coincard of only 1,000 copies with the image of the coin designer, Pavel Károly, was put up for sale at the price of € 5. Many of these are autographed by Károly himself, since much of them were sold during an event in which the Slovak mint and the designer himself participated.
