Since the last World Money Fair there had been a series of rumors, not confirmed by the Monnaie de Paris, but commented on in a petit committee by the official distributors of the French mint, which pointed to the small amount that the 2-euro coin would have commemorative dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Asterix and that it would not go out to circulation.
Today one of those distributors, anonymously, has sent me the official information that ratifies what were in principle rumors, as well as an image of the sketch of the coin.
In the end there will be 310,000 coins that will be minted, all of them put on sale. 300,000 will be issued in coincards presenting three different images, one in Asterix, another Obelix and another with Idéfix. The coin will be the same but the character that appears on the coincard will change. There will also be a Proof version for the coin of only 10,000 units. As for the price, it is not confirmed yet, and the official issue date is April 28.
Asterix will be the first comic book character to jump to a commemorative 2 euro coin, the currency of the «60 Years of Asterix». The first publication of an Asterix strip was in the Pilote magazine on October 29, 1959.
As I mentioned in your day, if this coin was going to circulation and you will find it in the exchange thousands of people, would be carefully set for the first time in a currency. Also many children would want to have theirs, something that could have attracted a crowd of new collectors, thus encouraging the arrival of new wisdom to numismatics.
The fact is that having to pay royalties for using the image of Asterix, makes it impracticable to mint millions of coins and their circulation. No Mint is there to lose money and no matter how much it bothers us, it will touch scratching your pocket.
