The 50th anniversary of Lunar Module Eagle’s landing on the Moon is just a few short months away on July 20, 2019. Already commemorative coins are sprouting like mushrooms after rain.
Prominent among early arrivals are two issues from the Royal Australian Mint.
Australia played an important role in the Apollo 11 mission. The 26 meter antenna of NASA’s Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station near Canberra is famous for being the antenna that received and relayed to 500 million viewers around the world the first TV images of astronaut Neil Armstrong setting foot on the Moon on July 20, 1969 (or July 21 in Australia).
The RAM has opted to mark both historic events, the “one small step for man” itself and the broadcast of that event.
The two coins involved are contained in Australian 2019 proof and BU sets.
For the first time in any Australian year set, the design of the 19.41 mm cupronickel 5 cents coin has been changed.
In 2019, the 5 cents plays the role of the Moon and shows the landing site of the lunar module along with Neil Armstrong’s footprint.
The 25 mm aluminum-bronze $1 represents Earth and depicts the interior of the Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station.
The designs are by Adam Ball.
Mintages of both sets are unlimited.

Also from the South Pacific is a massive 65.00 mm, 155.5175 g (5 oz) .999 fine silver $25 proof struck for the Solomon Islands.
The reverse scene of the original moonwalk is depicted on a shimmering Mother of Pearl inlay.
The design extends on to the enclosing silver rim. Mintage is 750.
