A few moments ago my friend Gerhard Schön , from Germany, has sent me the design that will show the 2 euro commemorative coin of the Vatican this year 2018 dedicated to the "European Year of Cultural Heritage", of which 101,000 pieces will be issued in quality BU and Proof, at a date yet to be determined.
The coin represents Laocoon and his children, a Greek sculptural group of controversial dating, although it is usually considered an original work from the beginning of the Christian era. The work is of a somewhat larger than natural size, 2.45 m high and is executed in white marble. It is located in the Pio-Clementino Museum belonging to the Vatican Museums of Rome, and next to the Torso del Belvedere is the only Greek original of the antiquarium. It represents the death of the Trojan priest Laocoon, or Laoconte, punished by the gods to die strangled by sea serpents with his two sons. The work was made by Agesandro, Polidoro and Atenodoro de Rodas, belonging to the School of Rhodes of the Hellenistic period.
