The Mint Houses of Germany have begun during this week the minting of the second currency of the series Climatic Zones, corresponding in 2018 to the Subtropical Zone, in which the polymer, this year of orange color, is used as part of it , separating the two metallic parts of the coin.

A total of 3.4 million (3 million in BU quality and 400,000 in Proof) are the pieces that will be officially issued during the next month of April. The plastic and translucent ring in orange, will present a different tone for each of the five Houses of Currency that Germany has.

During the act of beginning the production of coins, the qualities of these coins were commented on by the German authorities, not only from the aesthetic point of view, but also of the security measures against counterfeiting that could be implemented in the future. , both visibly and not visible in the polymer ring, being able to match banknotes in security measures. This act was also attended by a representative of the European Vending Association, who work with coin vending machines, it was said that these coins could be adapted to existing machines without any problem, simply being reprogrammed.

These coins, which already have two international awards for innovation, could reopen the debate on the substitution of the 5 euro bill for a currency, something for which some important European countries have already bet in the past.

Returning to the coin from the point of view of the collector, remember that the design corresponds to the artist Patrick Niesel on his back. The obverse, common to the entire series, was designed by Stefanie Radtke.

The reverse intends to show a winter image of humid subtropical zones with a Mediterranean climate, representing the flora and fauna typical of this climatic zone, such as domestic goats on shrubs, an umbrella-shaped tree that prevails in the area and the sea at the bottom represented by a straight line on the horizon.

The obverse shows an eagle, the word "Federal Republic of Germany", the face value "5 euro", the year 2018, the twelve European stars and, depending on the mint, the mint mark "A" (Berlin), "D" (Munich), "F" (Stuttgart), "G" (Karlsruhe) or "J" (Hamburg).

The smooth edge of the coin contains the inscription, in German, "climatic zones of the earth".
