Vatican City continues its belated 2025 numismatic program with the issuance of a €20 copper coin dedicated to one of the most emblematic images of Christian tradition: the Good Shepherd. Inspired by the Gospel parable, the scene depicts the shepherd carrying the lost sheep on his shoulders, a gesture laden with meaning that symbolizes mercy, care, and salvation.

This iconography has a long tradition in the history of art. During the first centuries of Christianity, it was a particularly widespread representation, frequently appearing in catacomb frescoes, sculptures, and reliefs, where it became a powerful symbol of hope, protection, and spiritual guidance for believers.

REVERSE

The reverse of the coin features the figure of the Good Shepherd, depicted with the lost sheep on his shoulders, one of the oldest and most significant images in the Gospels. The scene symbolizes mercy and care, evoking the idea that no one is too far from the path to return.

The figure appears surrounded by the twelve European stars and the legend "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO", next to the face value "20 EURO".

The composition visually summarizes the message of trust, return, and redemption that the scene inspires.

OBVERSE

The obverse of the piece transforms the composition into a symbolic architecture: the papal coat of arms with the IHS monogram, the tiara, and the crossed keys are placed on a grid that evokes the structure of the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, opened for the Jubilee. The deliberately empty lower panels suggest surfaces that reflect light like windows into the divine.

At the bottom appears the pilgrim's shell, symbol of the spiritual path, while the legend "FRANCISCVS PP – AN. XIII MMXXV" and the motto "MISERANDO ATQUE ELIGENDO" complete the scene.

The artist Gabriella Titotto thus constructs an image that evokes pilgrimage, grace and redemption.
